One Thing I Won't Be Bothered With This Year
05-01-2026
Someone finishes early, sometimes that someone is me.
The task is always due by the end of the day, but that's done before noon. No chest-thumping.. No one to impress..
It's a habit, a habit of over delivering without being asked!
The space that is supposed to be empty between noon to the end of the day, but it never remains empty. There is something else waiting to be filled in that space. If there is nothing, something will be created immediately to be filled in the space.
It's true that, On Earth, an empty space cannot remain empty without effort!!
Why do I do it?
Part of it feels responsible. Finishing early takes one task off someone else's to-do list.
But why others don't do it?
Others don't do this. They take their time. They work at their own pace. Sometimes their estimates sound ugly, even unjustified. And yet, that's fine. Nobody questions.
So why should I overdeliver?
Is it rewarding? Clearly not.
Early delivery is not a problem, the problem is that the system takes that as surplus. Surplus to be filled in with something else, sometimes, something rubbish as well!!
Perhaps, I should reframe this in 2026.
From "How fast can I finish this?" to "What does finishing well actually require?"
Sometimes the most responsible thing you can do is not be instantly available.
Not because you don't care, but because you care about the work more than the performance of speed.
